چکیده

The results of an investigation into the effects of pre-bond moisture absorbed by fibrecomposite substrates prior to bonding with various structural epoxy adhesives are presented. Substrates were bonded in the as-received condition (where substrates had been exposed to atmospheric moisture for periods of greater than three months) and were also bonded in the fully-dried condition (after drying under vacuum at 105 oC for 28 days). Additionally, substrates were conditioned by water submersion for various durations prior to bonding. Double cantilever beam tests were performed on the resulting joints to determine the adhesive fracture energy, GIC. The effect of pre-bond moisture on the glass transition temperature of the adhesive was also determined. One adhesive was shown to exhibit an extreme sensitivity to pre-bond moisture. A severe reduction in fracture energy accompanied a change in the fracture morphology and Tg. Other adhesives were shown to be relatively insensitive to the levels of pre-bond moisture introduced.

Analytical Solution of Stress Field in Adhesively Bonded Composite Single-Lap Joints Under Mechanical Loadings

In this paper, considering an adhesively bonded composite single-lap joint, a novel approach is presented to predict the peel and shear stress distributions of the adhesive layer for an ASTM standard test sample. In current method, the equilibrium equations are derived using the energy method and based on the Timoshenko’s beam theory. Two solution procedures then are discussed, one of which rep...

The Fracture Behaviour of Adhesively-Bonded Composite Joints: Effects of Rate of Test and Mode of Loading

The present paper discusses the results of an investigation into the effects of test rate and the mode of loading on the fracture energy, Gc, of adhesively-bonded fibre-composite joints. Various carbon-fibre reinforced-polymer (CFRP) matrix composite substrates have been bonded using two different types of automotive structural epoxy-adhesives. They have been tested via loading the bonded joint...

Experimental and numerical investigation of role of contamination on tensile and shear strength of adhesively bonded joints in carbon fiber reinforced composites

Adhesively bonded joints are commonly used in airframe structures due to their superior strength to weight ratio, lower maintenance cost, and longer service life. The bonded joint reliability is affected by the environmental conditions, such as moisture, temperature, and service environment. In this study, the role of contamination during the bonding process on the joint mechanical integrity is...

Adhesively bonded structure and bonded composite repairs are often exposed to aviation fuel during service. A relatively limited number of studies examining the influence of fuel and the many additives it contains have been made. The current report details experimental studies that have examined the influence of fuel and common additives such as lubricity and deicing agents on the fracture toug...
